OUR COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT
“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” Winston Churchill (quote on the back of Nancy Babcock’s business/appointment card)
Members brought quilts, quilt blocks, napkins and placemats to the spring luncheon at Brook Lodge. It was a wonderful response to our commitment to bring comfort to veterans, both those who are being treated in frontline hospitals and those who are being cared for in the Battle Creek Veterans Medical Center.
Two completed quilts, three quilt tops to be quilted, and 13 individual blocks that will be joined with other (yet-to-be-made) blocks to create four more quilts were contributed to the Quilts of Valor project. Members will continue to sew quilt blocks throughout the year, and more finished quilts will be sent off to hospitals where they will be presented to the wounded.
We’ve heard many heart-warming stories about how much these quilts are appreciated and how they provide comfort.
Many members have been busy hemming napkins – we received 333 brightly assorted napkins and 30 placemats to take to the Volunteer Center at the VA Medical Center in Battle Creek. They were delivered May 7, to Nancy Babcock, Chief, Community & Volunteer
Service, and receptionist Dawn Craig, who coordinated
the project. They enthusiastically told us of their Culture of Change project that is in process. The nursing home facilities encompass a range of needs, and the hallways in one unit have been transformed with paint to give it a more homelike look. Individual rooms have outside walls that appear to have a window
with a box of flowers, a log cabin, a stone house with shrubs, etc. This has been very successful for patients who suffer dementias as it gives them some reference to life before they came to the institution walls. The napkins and placemats that we gave will become part of the home-like setting for mealtime that is a part of their Culture of Change project.
Members who have received training to sew adaptive clothing will continue with that effort throughout the year. Those who wish to join this project may call Jan Luchies to learn about the next training session.
